Amish-Inspired Christmas Chutney

Amish-Inspired Christmas Chutney. Tangy, aromatic and sweet – a rustic, addition to any party platter

  • 4 large beef tomatoes
  • 2 green bell peppers
  • 2 large white onions
  • 2 sticks celery
  • 1½tbsp sugar
  • 1tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • ½tsp celery seed
  • 1tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1tsp ground ginger
  • 1tsp ground cloves
  • ¾ tsp ground allspice
  • ½tsp ground black pepper
  • ½tsp salt

  1. Peel, core and chop the tomatoes and place them in a large saucepan. Follow by finely chopping the onion and celery; and washing, coring and chopping the bell peppers to add to the pan.
  2. Add the celery seed, spices, salt, pepper and sugar, and stir until the vegetables are well coated.
  3. Finally, mix in the apple cider vinegar.
  4. Place the pan onto a medium heat and bring to a boil, then turn the heat right down and simmer for 1-2 hours, or until thick and the pools of liquid have visibly been absorbed – stirring intermittently.
  5. Once desired consistency is reached, pour hot into sterilized, dry jars leaving about a centimeter of space at the top. Seal and store in a cool, dry place. Keeps for up to 3 months unopened, but ensure to refrigerate upon opening and use within 7 days.
